Udupi — The Kambala world has lost one of its brightest stars. “Chenna”, the much-loved and most decorated buffalo in the traditional Kambala races, passed away on Thursday (August 14) at the age of 25 after battling age-related ailments. The legendary racer had been retired for the past three years. His final rites were performed the same evening.
Chenna’s remarkable journey began around 22 years ago when Barkur Shantaram Shetty brought him from Kadandale Kalu Panara’s hut and raised him with care. Trained for Kambala, Chenna made an immediate mark—winning a medal in the junior ploughing category at the Koti-Chennai Kambala in Moodbidri for three consecutive years.
Upon moving into the senior category, Chenna was paired with Kolachur under Sukumar Shetty’s ownership. Known for his playful streak, Chenna sometimes misbehaved even during races, which once led to his elimination in the senior ploughing category.
A turning point came when Bantwal’s Mahakalibettu Sitaram Shetty took Chenna as his racing partner (konah), with caretaker Vincent nurturing him and refining his racing skills. That same year, Chenna claimed the senior ploughing category championship, cementing his place as one of the sport’s greats.
Over the years, Chenna earned more awards than any other Kambala buffalo of his time, becoming a household name among Kambala enthusiasts. His passing marks the end of an era for fans of this coastal sport.
