Kaup: Kaup police have seized a goods vehicle after its driver was allegedly found transporting children in a dangerous manner on National Highway 66 near the Katapady underpass on September 10 evening.

The vehicle was travelling from Mangaluru towards Udupi when the incident came to light.

Children found in rear cargo section

According to police, around 8 to 10 children were allegedly allowed to stand in the rear cargo section of the goods vehicle while it was being driven on the highway.

Police said the act amounted to a violation of the vehicle’s permit conditions and posed a serious safety risk to the children.

Videos showing the children travelling in the rear cargo section of the goods vehicle were widely circulated on social media, following which the incident came to the attention of the authorities.

Case registered, vehicle seized

Following the incident, Kaup police registered a case on September 11 against the vehicle involved.

The police subsequently seized the goods vehicle used to transport the children.

The incident has raised concerns over the unsafe transportation of children in goods vehicles, particularly on a busy highway such as NH 66.

Police said further investigation into the case is under way.
