Udupi: Chaos and frustration are growing in Kaup Municipality as a fully constructed public toilet, inaugurated eight months ago, remains locked and unused—a glaring example of municipal negligence.

The facility, built near the Kaup market, was intended to serve vendors, farmers, and especially women visiting the weekly Friday fair. However, despite being complete, the toilet has not been opened for public use, leaving visitors with no sanitation options.

Locals, farmers from nearby areas, and marketgoers have raised strong objections. Many expressed anger over the lack of basic facilities, pointing out that the situation is particularly difficult for women and elderly visitors.

“This is not just poor planning—it’s complete apathy,” said one local trader, highlighting that business owners and farmers are paying additional fees to the municipality despite the lack of support or infrastructure.

Compounding the issue, the weekly fair is held on the service road, leading to haphazard vehicle parking and frequent traffic disruptions. Traders complain that no proper arrangements are made for crowd or stall management.

Citizens are now demanding that the municipality immediately open the toilet for use and take urgent steps to provide basic civic amenities during the weekly market.
