Mangaluru: On Wednesday, July 31, U T Khader, Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, advocated for Tulu to be designated as the state’s second official language. Speaking to the media, Khader highlighted Tulu’s cultural and linguistic importance, noting the global promotion by Tulu artists, playwrights, and filmmakers.
Khader emphasized the role of Tulu in uniting around 25 communities in the coastal region, describing it as a language that fosters togetherness. He acknowledged the strong demand for Tulu’s official recognition and revealed that discussions have already been held on the matter.
He drew parallels with other regions, mentioning that Bengali has been recognized as a second language in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Khader also noted that the state has approached the Centre with this proposal and that the upcoming meeting will reference the reports from these states.
Khader expressed enthusiasm for incorporating Tulu into legislative processes and encouraged its wider use to promote and appreciate the language further. He stated that such recognition would enhance the celebration of Tulu’s rich heritage and traditions.
