Kundapur: A large dolphin was found dead in a decomposed condition on the seashore near the Kodi lighthouse here.

The marine mammal was noticed on the beach and information was provided to the concerned authorities. The Kundapur unit of Reef Watch, an organisation involved in marine conservation, conducted a post-mortem examination of the dolphin.

Following the examination, the dolphin was buried on the beach in coordination with the Kundapur forest department.

The coastal security police also assisted the officials and volunteers during the operation.

The cause of the dolphin’s death could not be immediately ascertained. The decomposed condition of the carcass also made it difficult to establish further details.

Dr Aju of Reef Watch, assistant staff member Nagaraj Poojary and Manjunath from the forest department were present during the examination and burial.

The incident highlights the continued need to monitor marine life along the Karnataka coast, particularly when dead marine mammals are washed ashore.
