Udupi: Kundapur Rural Sub-Inspector Nasir Hussain reportedly collapsed while participating in a marathon for police officers at Ajjarakadu grounds on Sunday morning and died shortly after. He was 58.
The district unit of the Karnataka Police had organised a 5-km marathon for police personnel as part of a fitness and wellness initiative. The event witnessed participation from hundreds of officers across the district, with the run being held at the Ajjarakadu grounds.
According to sources, Hussain was among the participants who took part in the early morning run. While on the track, he is said to have suddenly collapsed and turned seriously ill, causing concern among fellow officers and organisers.
Rushed to hospital, declared dead
Police personnel and event organisers immediately rushed to assist the officer and shifted him to a private hospital in the city for emergency medical care. However, doctors who examined him reportedly declared him dead shortly after arrival.
Though the exact cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed, preliminary information suggests that he may have suffered a cardiac arrest. Authorities indicated that further medical procedures, including post-mortem examination if required, would determine the precise cause.
The sudden demise of the officer cast a pall of gloom over the event, which was intended to promote physical fitness and camaraderie among police personnel. The marathon was part of broader efforts within the department to encourage healthy lifestyles and stress management.
Long years of service in multiple stations
Nasir Hussain had served in various police stations across Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts during his career. He was earlier posted as Sub-Inspector in Amasebailu, Kundapur Town, Kundapur Traffic, Shankaranarayana and Karkala Rural police stations in Udupi district.
He had also served in several police stations in Chikkamagaluru district, earning the respect of colleagues and superiors for his dedication and professionalism. At the time of his death, he was serving as Sub-Inspector in Kundapur Rural.
Colleagues described him as a disciplined and committed officer who carried out his duties with sincerity. Many officers expressed shock over the sudden loss, recalling his active participation in departmental activities.
Condolences pour in
Senior police officials and members of the department conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family. Fellow officers who were present at the marathon said the incident was unexpected, as Hussain had joined the run like many others in good spirits.
The department is expected to extend necessary assistance and support to his family as per service norms. His passing has left a void among colleagues in both Udupi and neighbouring districts where he had previously served.
