In a surprise late-night operation on Saturday, the Udupi subdivision police launched a special naka bandi drive under the Manipal police station limits, aiming to curb violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Supervised by Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, the enforcement involved coordinated efforts from Udupi DySP, Manipal Police Inspector, and personnel from Udupi Town, Traffic, Malpe, and Manipal police stations. The checks were carried out across five key locations.
As part of the drive, authorities seized 21 vehicles, including 18 cars and 3 two-wheelers, primarily for drunk driving. Legal proceedings have been initiated under applicable sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. Under the law, driving under the influence attracts a minimum fine of ₹10,000 upon conviction in court.
Additionally, the police collected spot fines totaling ₹1 lakh from 10 vehicle owners found guilty of offenses such as triple riding, rash driving, and ignoring traffic signals.
SP Shankar emphasized that this operation is part of an ongoing effort to enhance road safety across Udupi district. He warned that similar intensified checks would continue in the coming days, with a strong focus on curbing drunken driving, overspeeding, and negligent behavior on the roads.
