Kundapur: A leopard that had reportedly strayed from a nearby forest area into a residential locality was safely rescued after it fell into a well at Hosamane in Jansale of Siddapur village. Forest officials carried out the rescue operation after receiving information from local residents about the trapped animal.
The incident created concern among residents in the area, as encounters involving wild animals entering human settlements often raise safety concerns for both people and wildlife. Forest officials later confirmed that the leopard was rescued without injuries and safely released back into its natural habitat.
Leopard falls into well after safety net tears
According to officials and local residents, the leopard accidentally fell into the well after the protective net placed over it reportedly tore apart.
The animal is believed to have entered the residential area after straying from nearby forest regions before eventually falling into the well. Local residents who noticed the leopard trapped inside immediately informed the forest department.
Authorities responded to the information and initiated rescue measures to prevent harm to the animal and ensure public safety.
Forest department conducts rescue operation
Forest officials arrived at the spot and began efforts to safely retrieve the leopard from the well. Rescue personnel used a cage during the operation and successfully lifted the animal out without causing injury.
The operation drew the attention of local residents who gathered near the area while officials carried out the rescue work.
After being brought out of the well, the leopard was transported to the Shankaranarayana range forest office for observation and medical examination.
Veterinary examination conducted
Officials later identified the animal as a nearly four-year-old female leopard.
A veterinarian examined the leopard to assess its physical condition and determine whether it had sustained injuries during the fall or rescue process. Forest authorities stated that the animal was found to be in stable condition after the examination.
Once officials confirmed its fitness and overall health, the leopard was safely released back into a forest area.
Residents and officials cooperate in operation
The rescue operation involved participation from forest department personnel as well as local residents who assisted in coordinating the efforts.
Officials involved in the operation included Deputy Range Forest Officers Manjunath and Santosh Tatlagi, along with forest guards Zaheer and Prashanth and other staff members.
Human-wildlife encounters occasionally occur in regions located close to forested areas, especially when animals move outside their habitats in search of food or movement pathways.
The successful rescue ensured the safety of both residents and the animal, while highlighting the importance of timely intervention and coordinated action during wildlife emergencies.
