Manipal: A leopard has been causing concern in the Manipal area for the past week, with recent sightings heightening public fear. The leopard was first seen in the Perampalli house compound last Friday night and later spotted in Anant Nagar, Syndicate Circle, and the End Point area on Monday night.

Despite efforts by the forest department to locate the leopard in Perampalli, their attempts were unsuccessful. New evidence in Anant Nagar, including damaged vehicles and paw prints, suggests the leopard may still be in the area, or there could be multiple leopards.

A local resident’s car was damaged, with scratched tyres and paw prints found nearby, indicating the leopard’s presence. The leopard was also seen at Manipal End Point, prompting Deputy Range Officer Suresh Ganiga to set up a trap with assistance from Mahe Estate Officer Balakrishna Prabhu and Security Officer Satish.

Residents are now fearful, especially those commuting at night, including hotel workers and night-shift employees. The presence of street dogs around End Point is believed to attract leopards, with locals suggesting the municipality control the street dog population.

The forest department has been urged to increase night patrolling and set traps in areas with thick vegetation. Manipal’s Mannapalla Lake, frequented by joggers and children, has become a potential hiding spot for the leopard, causing hesitation among visitors.

Forest officials have assured that measures are in place to capture the leopard and have urged the public to report any sightings immediately.
