Udupi: Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary on Thursday inaugurated a newly constructed lift at the Indrali railway station, developed by Konkan Railway at a cost of approximately Rs 2.26 crore. During the event, the MP reiterated the need to merge Konkan Railway with Indian Railways, stating that the move would enable the region to receive greater financial assistance from the Centre and accelerate railway infrastructure development.
The newly inaugurated lift has been opened for public use, providing improved accessibility and convenience for passengers, particularly senior citizens, persons with disabilities and those carrying luggage.
MP calls for early merger of Konkan Railway
Addressing the gathering, Kota Srinivas Poojary said the merger of Konkan Railway with Indian Railways would pave the way for higher central funding and faster implementation of railway projects across the coastal region.
He said Konkan Railway is jointly owned by Karnataka, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra. According to the MP, Kerala and Goa have already transferred their shares to the Central government, while the process in Karnataka has been delayed.
Poojary said he had discussed the issue with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who assured him of full cooperation. He also held discussions with district in-charge minister U T Khader and expressed confidence that Karnataka would soon transfer its shareholding to the Centre.
The MP added that Maharashtra’s approval would also be necessary to complete the merger process, and efforts would be made to obtain the state’s consent at the earliest.
Vande Bharat proposal under feasibility study
The MP said one of his major demands is the introduction of a Vande Bharat Express between Bengaluru and Karwar.
He informed that a feasibility study is currently underway and expressed hope that the coastal region would soon receive Vande Bharat train services.
Poojary also revealed that a proposal worth Rs 14.50 crore has been submitted for the comprehensive development of Barkur railway station. If the required funds are sanctioned within the next two months, construction of passenger shelters and other infrastructure facilities will begin immediately.
MLA seeks better roads and station surroundings
Speaking at the programme, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said several passenger-friendly developments have taken place at Udupi railway station over the past two years.
He noted that construction of a proper shelter was necessary before installing the lift facility. Earlier, passengers, especially those travelling at night, lacked adequate waiting space and basic amenities.
Suvarna appealed to the chairman of the Udupi Urban Development Authority to focus on beautifying the surroundings of the railway station. He also called for widening the approach road, stating that improved road connectivity similar to the Malpe-Manipal road would make the station more accessible and attractive.
Tourism and infrastructure go hand in hand
Udupi Urban Development Authority chairman Dinakar Herur said Udupi, known as the land of Lord Krishna, attracts visitors from across the world, making infrastructure development essential for promoting tourism.
He credited the MP for completing several long-pending railway projects, including the railway bridge, and expressed confidence that more developmental initiatives would be undertaken in the coming years.
Konkan Railway plans further upgrades
Regional Railway Manager Asha Shetty said Konkan Railway has consistently worked to improve passenger amenities despite gradual progress.
She said approximately Rs 4.5 crore has been spent on upgrading Udupi railway station over the past year. The expenditure includes installation of the lift, platform shelters and roofing facilities.
The next phase of development will focus on improving the station’s circulating area and parking facilities. She acknowledged complaints regarding waterlogging in the parking area due to its low-lying location and assured that measures would be taken to resolve the issue while beautifying the surroundings.
With the lift now operational, passengers using Indrali railway station will benefit from improved accessibility as Konkan Railway continues to modernise infrastructure across the coastal belt.
