Udupi: A 25-year-old man has been remanded to judicial custody for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a road accident on National Highway 169(A) at Eshwar Nagar in Manipal, leaving a scooter rider seriously injured.
The accused has been identified as Samegdh L J (25), a resident of Mudaru in Karkala taluk. He was arrested by the Manipal police on June 22 and later produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Accident occurred near Sai Sagar Hotel
According to police, the incident took place on the night of June 19 at around 10.08 pm.
The complainant, Abhishek Nayak (21), a resident of Karvalu in Alevoor village of Udupi taluk, was returning to his home in Kelaparkala on his scooter bearing registration number KA-20-HE-5260 after completing his work in Manipal.
When he reached the U-turn near Sai Sagar Hotel on NH-169(A), a car bearing registration number KA-19-ME-8833 allegedly approached from the MIT side at high speed.
Police stated that the car driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was driving in a rash and negligent manner when the vehicle crashed into Abhishek’s scooter.
Rider sustains serious injuries
The collision resulted in damage to both vehicles and left the scooter rider seriously injured.
Following the accident, the injured man was provided medical assistance, and a complaint was lodged with the Manipal police station.
Based on the complaint and preliminary investigation, police registered a case against the accused under relevant provisions of law related to negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Accused remanded to judicial custody
Investigating officers arrested the accused on June 22 and produced him before the jurisdictional court.
After hearing the matter, the court remanded Samegdh L J to judicial custody pending further investigation.
Police said the probe is continuing and further action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation.
Drunken driving remains a major concern
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of drunken driving and its potential to cause serious accidents on busy highways.
Police have repeatedly appealed to motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol and have been conducting regular checks to curb such offences and improve road safety.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and strictly follow traffic regulations to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
