Udupi — Women and Child Development Minister and Udupi District In-charge Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar lauded the Udupi District Police Department for its proactive efforts in public safety through the large-scale installation of CCTV cameras across the district.
Speaking at the Udupi Service Bus Stand during the launch of the Shyena Drishti Kendra, the minister praised the initiative jointly undertaken by the district police and the Udupi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She emphasised that the CCTV network will serve as a deterrent to crime and help prevent untoward incidents.
The ambitious project involves the installation of 621 night vision cameras at 207 key junctions, along with 20 automatic number plate reader (ANPR) cameras at 10 border entry points. The initiative, costing approximately ₹2.5 to ₹3 crore, has been fully funded by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry — a gesture the minister publicly acknowledged and appreciated on behalf of the district administration and the state government.
Minister Hebbalkar described the move as a bold step towards strengthening security in both urban and rural areas, noting that such measures will enhance surveillance, aid investigations, and foster public confidence.
The launch event was attended by District Commissioner T.K. Swarup, Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Bayal, Superintendent of Police Hari Ram Shankar, and other senior police officials.
