Udupi: In a tragic incident, the body of a missing lecturer was found in a well in Udupi on Saturday, with police suspecting that he may have died by suicide.
The deceased has been identified as Ganapathi Bhat (55), a native of Sirsi. He was working as a lecturer at a Sanskrit college in Udupi and was residing alone in a rented accommodation in Kunjibettu.
Missing complaint led to search operation
According to police sources, a missing person complaint had been registered at the city police station after Bhat was reported untraceable. Following the complaint, police initiated a search operation in and around the locality.
During the search, his body was discovered in a nearby well, raising suspicion of suicide. However, officials stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after further investigation and post-mortem examination.
Fire brigade retrieves body
Fire brigade personnel were called to the spot to assist in retrieving the body from the well. The operation was carried out carefully, following which the remains were handed over to the police for further procedures.
Sub-Inspector Narayan, along with staff members Ganesh D and investigation assistant Jaswa, conducted the inquest and completed the required legal formalities at the scene.
Social worker assists in procedures
Social worker Nityanand Volkadu extended assistance during the process by helping transport the body to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police officials stated that the cooperation of local individuals and emergency personnel helped in carrying out the procedures efficiently.
Investigation continues
Authorities have registered a case and are continuing their investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident. While preliminary findings suggest suicide, police have not ruled out other possibilities and are examining all angles.
