Udupi: In a significant breakthrough, the Udupi City Police have successfully traced a woman who had gone missing nearly a decade ago, bringing closure to a long-pending missing person case. The woman, identified as Bhavani, was located in Bengaluru following sustained efforts by the Women’s Missing Task Force and the Udupi City Police under the guidance of Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, IPS.
According to police officials, Bhavani originally hails from Channaraya town in Hassan district. She had been living in an orphanage since birth and had reportedly gone missing about 10 years ago under circumstances that remained unclear for years. Despite several initial attempts, her whereabouts could not be traced at the time, and the case remained unresolved.
The recent development comes as part of intensified efforts by the Udupi police to revisit old and unresolved missing person cases, particularly those involving women and vulnerable individuals.
Case background and disappearance
Police sources said Bhavani had no immediate family support and had spent most of her early life in an orphanage. About a decade ago, she reportedly disappeared suddenly, triggering concern among caretakers and authorities. A missing person complaint was subsequently registered, and preliminary searches were carried out in nearby districts.
However, due to limited leads and lack of concrete information about her movements, the case gradually went cold. Over the years, the file remained open, with periodic reviews but no major breakthroughs.
Officials said cases involving individuals from institutional backgrounds such as orphanages are often challenging, as they may lack identity documents, strong social networks or clear information about relatives, making tracking extremely difficult.
Renewed efforts by Women’s Missing Task Force
In recent months, the Udupi District Police undertook a renewed drive to re-examine old missing cases. As part of this initiative, the Women’s Missing Task Force, working closely with Udupi City Police, began analysing past records, photographs and available descriptions.
Under the supervision of SP Hariram Shankar, IPS, teams were directed to use both conventional policing methods and modern technological tools to trace missing persons. Officials reviewed shelter homes, orphanages, non-governmental organisations and records maintained by social welfare departments across districts.
Sources said that during this process, certain inputs suggested that Bhavani may have travelled outside Hassan district and could be living in a metropolitan city. Based on these leads, police expanded their search to Bengaluru.
Tracing Bhavani in Bengaluru
After weeks of verification and coordination with local authorities in the capital city, the police team was able to trace Bhavani in Bengaluru. Officials confirmed her identity through available records and interactions, following which arrangements were made to bring her safely to Udupi.
Police said Bhavani was found to be in a stable condition. Necessary care and counselling were arranged after she was brought back, considering the emotional and psychological impact of being separated from familiar surroundings for several years.
An officer involved in the operation said the successful tracing was the result of teamwork and persistence. “This case highlights how sustained efforts, even after many years, can lead to positive outcomes,” the officer said.
Role of district police leadership
Udupi SP Hariram Shankar, IPS, lauded the efforts of the Women’s Missing Task Force and the city police personnel involved in the operation. He said the district police remain committed to tracing missing persons and reuniting them with appropriate care systems or families wherever possible.
“Every missing person case is important, regardless of how much time has passed. We are making concerted efforts to reopen old cases and use all available resources to bring answers,” the SP said.
He also emphasised the need for community cooperation, urging citizens to promptly report missing cases and share information that may help police trace individuals.
Broader significance of the case
The successful tracing of Bhavani after nearly 10 years underscores the importance of continued follow-up in missing person cases. Police officials noted that Karnataka reports several thousand missing cases annually, many of which involve women, children and persons from vulnerable backgrounds.
While a large number of such cases are resolved within months, some remain pending for years due to lack of leads. Officials said renewed reviews, inter-district coordination and improved data-sharing mechanisms have helped solve several old cases in recent times.
Conclusion
The tracing of Bhavani marks a moment of relief for authorities and highlights the impact of focused policing and persistence. Udupi City Police officials said they would continue efforts to track other long-pending missing cases and strengthen mechanisms to ensure vulnerable individuals receive timely help and protection.
