Udupi: A 21-year-old youth died after the scooter he was riding crashed into the rear of a lorry parked on the state highway near the Karkala–Padubidri bus stand at Nandikoor on the night of September 2.
The deceased has been identified as Manjunath Bailappa Muragali (21). He was travelling from Karkala towards Surathkal on his scooter when the accident occurred. He sustained critical injuries in the collision and was being rushed to a hospital, but died on the way. The incident was reported by local media and Daijiworld on September 4.
Scooter crashes into lorry on highway
According to reports, the accident took place near the Karkala–Padubidri bus stand at Nandikoor when Manjunath’s scooter collided with the rear of a lorry that had been parked on the state highway during the night.
It is alleged that the stationary lorry did not have its parking lights or indicators switched on. Other precautionary measures to alert approaching motorists were also reportedly absent.
The lack of adequate visibility is believed to have contributed to the collision. However, the circumstances surrounding the accident are subject to investigation, and the responsibility for the incident will have to be established by the authorities.
The impact left Manjunath seriously injured. He was immediately taken towards a hospital for emergency treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries while being transported.
Victim was travelling towards Surathkal
Manjunath was travelling from Karkala towards Surathkal when the accident occurred. He was originally from Rayadurga and had been residing in the Kodikere area of Surathkal.
He was employed with a private company. According to reports, his family had also been making preparations for his marriage. Manjunath had reportedly got engaged about a year ago, and his wedding was scheduled to take place in November.
His death has left his family and relatives in shock, particularly with the wedding only a few months away.
Concerns over parked vehicles at night
The accident has once again highlighted the risks posed by heavy vehicles parked on highways and state roads without adequate warning signs or lighting.
A stationary lorry can be difficult for motorists to notice at night, particularly on stretches where street lighting is inadequate. Parking lights, hazard indicators, reflective markings, warning triangles and other safety measures can help approaching drivers identify an obstruction and react in time.
In this case, reports have alleged that the lorry was parked without parking lights or indicators. The allegation is part of the circumstances being examined following the fatal accident.
