Malpe: A newborn baby boy found abandoned in a lane near a house at Hoode under Malpe police station limits died despite medical treatment on Sunday morning. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s abandonment and death.
Baby found in critical condition
The infant was found at around 6.30 am by Abdul Shukoor, a resident of Hoode, when he stepped out of his house. The baby was found naked and lying face down in a lane beside the house.
Shukoor immediately alerted neighbours, who checked on the infant and found that he was still alive. The baby had an injury to his face and was bleeding from the mouth.
The neighbours promptly arranged for the infant to be taken to Udupi Mother and Child Hospital, where he was admitted for emergency treatment.
Infant dies during treatment
The newborn was reportedly in critical condition when he was brought to the hospital. Despite efforts by doctors to save him, the baby died at around 9.30 am.
The body has been kept at the mortuary of the district hospital in Ajjarkad.
According to information from the District Child Protection Unit’s Suraksha, the infant is suspected to have been born only a day before he was found. Preliminary information indicates that severe bleeding from injuries to the mouth may have contributed to his death.
The exact circumstances leading to the injuries and the abandonment of the baby are yet to be established.
Police examine CCTV footage
Malpe police have registered a case and begun investigating the incident. Officers are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas in an effort to identify the person or persons who may have abandoned the newborn.
Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said the police were also examining the possibility that the baby may have been abandoned by migrant workers from North India.
He said CCTV footage from nearby areas was being checked and confirmed that an investigation was underway.
The police are expected to gather further evidence from the area where the baby was found, examine available CCTV recordings and speak to residents who may have noticed suspicious movement in the vicinity.
Investigation underway
The incident has raised serious questions about the circumstances in which the newborn was abandoned in the residential area. Investigators will have to establish the identity of the baby’s parents or guardians and determine how and when the infant sustained the injuries.
Officials are also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the child’s birth and whether any person or group was involved in abandoning the baby.
The investigation remains underway, and further details are expected once police obtain CCTV footage and other evidence.
