Udupi: A gaping pit left uncovered after cable-laying work near Shankarapur bus stop on the Katapadi-Shirva state highway has become a serious safety hazard. Residents are warning that the exposed trench could lead to fatal accidents, especially with the onset of the monsoon season.

The pit, dug right in the heart of the highway, is now collecting rainwater, increasing the risk of collapse and road damage. Locals describe it as a “death trap” in the making, raising alarms about the consequences if immediate action is not taken.

What’s more concerning is that this stretch of the highway was newly asphalted just weeks ago. However, the carelessness in execution—digging into the road’s axle and failing to restore it properly—has not only compromised the road’s durability but also public safety.

Residents are calling on the responsible departments and contractors to act swiftly by filling and securing the pit before any untoward incidents occur.

“If left unattended, this will erode the road and endanger lives. It’s unacceptable that such negligence continues unchecked,” said a local commuter.

As the rains intensify, citizens stress the urgent need for accountability and precautionary repair work to preserve the road and protect lives.
