Udupi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the coastal districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada as the ‘Pushya Nakshatra’ rains intensified across the region. Authorities have warned of widespread heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on July 29.
The alert comes amid increasing rainfall activity along the Karnataka coast, with the IMD forecasting intense showers in several parts of the state, particularly in the coastal belt.
Heavy rain likely across coastal districts
According to the weather forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in many places across coastal Karnataka during the day.
The IMD has cautioned that the rain is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in isolated areas, increasing the risk of waterlogging, traffic disruptions and reduced visibility.
Residents have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
Orange alert for three coastal districts
The Meteorological Department has specifically placed Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada under an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall that could affect normal life.
District administrations and disaster management authorities are expected to closely monitor the weather situation and remain prepared to respond to any rain-related emergencies.
Officials have also advised fishermen, tourists and people living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to exercise caution as weather conditions may deteriorate rapidly.

With the monsoon regaining strength under the influence of the Pushya Nakshatra rains, authorities have urged the public to follow weather advisories issued by the IMD and local administration.
People have been advised to avoid venturing into rivers, streams and flooded areas, while motorists have been asked to drive carefully due to poor visibility and slippery roads.
Emergency services have also been placed on alert to respond to any incidents arising from heavy rainfall, including flooding, fallen trees or disruptions to power supply.
