Udupi: Officials of the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs have seized more than 15 quintals of rice allegedly meant for free distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS) from a general store in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district.
The seized stock, weighing over 15 quintals and valued at approximately ₹51,680, was allegedly diverted from the PDS and stored for unauthorised sale.
Raid conducted following information
The seizure was carried out during an inspection by officials after receiving information about the alleged illegal storage of government-supplied rice at the general store.
Authorities said the rice was intended for distribution to eligible beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System but was found stocked at the commercial establishment instead.
Case registered
Following the seizure, officials registered a case and launched an investigation to determine how the subsidised rice was diverted from the PDS supply chain.
The department is also examining whether more individuals were involved in the alleged illegal procurement and storage of the food grains.

The action is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to curb the illegal diversion and black-market sale of subsidised food grains meant for economically weaker sections.
