Udupi: A pedestrian sustained serious injuries in a hit-and-run incident in Udupi after being struck by a car reportedly travelling in the wrong direction near Eshwaranagar late on Thursday night. The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, leaving the victim injured on the road.
Police later traced and seized the vehicle near Manchi Kumeri, and efforts are currently underway to identify the driver and owner.
Victim injured while returning from work
According to police sources, the injured person has been identified as Veerappa, a native of Beltangady. He was returning from work along with his acquaintance Vineesh after finishing their duties at a restaurant in Eshwaranagar.
The two were reportedly crossing the road divider and walking when the accident occurred. At that moment, a car approached from the opposite direction, allegedly moving against the designated flow of traffic.
Car hits pedestrian at high speed
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the vehicle was travelling at a considerable speed when it struck Veerappa. The impact caused him to suffer severe injuries, particularly to his head, leg, and waist.
The sudden collision left the victim seriously hurt, requiring immediate attention. Locals and passersby reportedly rushed to assist following the incident.
Driver flees, vehicle later traced
Instead of stopping to assist or report the incident, the driver fled the spot along with the vehicle. Police were alerted soon after and initiated an investigation into the hit-and-run case.
Based on initial inputs and tracking efforts, the police were able to locate the vehicle near Manchi Kumeri. The car has since been seized and taken into custody for further examination.
