Udupi: Manipal police in Udupi district destroyed 120 defective and illegally modified motorcycle silencers using a bulldozer as part of a road safety and noise control enforcement drive. The silencers had been seized over the past six months during a series of special vehicle checking operations targeting traffic violations and unlawful vehicle modifications.
According to a press note issued by the police department, the silencers were fitted on motorcycles to create excessively loud noise, in violation of motor vehicle norms and noise pollution rules. The destruction process was carried out in the presence of senior police officials to send a strong message against the use of modified exhaust systems.
Special checking drives conducted over six months
Police said the silencers were confiscated during sustained enforcement drives focused on modified two-wheelers and nuisance riding. Traffic and law-and-order teams conducted repeated roadside inspections, particularly in student and high-traffic zones, where complaints about loud motorcycle noise were frequent.
During these checks, officers stopped motorcycles suspected of having altered exhaust systems and verified compliance with approved manufacturer specifications. Vehicles found fitted with non-standard, high-decibel silencers were booked and the equipment seized.
In total, 120 separate cases were registered in connection with illegal silencers and related violations. Police collected ₹1.05 lakh as penalty from offenders during the enforcement period.
Officials said many of the modified silencers were designed to amplify engine noise far beyond permissible limits, causing disturbance to residents and other road users.
Action taken under supervision of SP
The destruction of the seized silencers was carried out under the supervision of Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar. A bulldozer was used to physically crush and render the equipment unusable, ensuring that the confiscated items do not re-enter circulation.
Manipal Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad and other officers were present during the disposal operation. Police said proper documentation and inventory procedures were followed before destruction.
Such public destruction drives are occasionally conducted to reinforce enforcement seriousness and deter repeat violations.
Noise pollution and safety concerns
Police officials noted that illegally modified silencers are not only a noise nuisance but can also be linked to unsafe riding behaviour. High-noise exhaust systems are often associated with reckless riding, street racing and stunt activity, especially among young riders.
Excessive vehicle noise has been a recurring source of complaints in urban and semi-urban areas, particularly near educational institutions, residential layouts and hospital zones. Authorities said strict checks will continue to ensure compliance with noise and vehicle fitness standards.
Standard motor vehicle regulations require that exhaust systems conform to approved decibel limits and manufacturer design. Alterations that increase sound output or remove internal baffles are prohibited.
Continued enforcement planned
Police said vehicle checking drives will continue in the coming months, with special focus on illegal modifications, helmet compliance, drunk driving and documentation violations. Repeat offenders may face stricter penalties and additional legal action.
Officers also appealed to vehicle owners and mechanics not to install or promote illegal exhaust modifications, warning that both users and facilitators can be penalised under relevant rules.
Conclusion
The destruction of 120 seized silencers marks a visible step in Manipal police’s ongoing efforts to curb noise pollution and unsafe vehicle modifications. Authorities said consistent enforcement and public awareness are essential to maintaining road discipline and community comfort.
