Byndoor: A residential house belonging to a poor family completely collapsed at Arehole in Navunda village of Byndoor taluk early Thursday morning following continuous heavy rainfall.
The house, belonging to Sadashiva Ganiga, came crashing down at around 5.30 am due to the force of the downpour. Ganiga and his wife were asleep inside when the walls and roof began to collapse.
Couple escapes moments before tragedy
Startled by the loud noise, the couple immediately rushed outside and escaped without injuries. However, household belongings and food grains stored inside the house were completely buried beneath the debris.
The family was already facing severe financial difficulties. Ganiga is reportedly suffering from a serious illness and is unable to undertake daily wage work. With his wife and two children dependent on him, the family was struggling to meet its basic needs even before losing their home.
The collapse has now left them homeless, forcing the family to take shelter in a small rented house.
Officials inspect collapsed house
Following the incident, the village administrative officer and panchayat officials visited the spot and conducted an inspection.
The family may be eligible for emergency compensation of up to Rs 2.5 lakh under government regulations. However, the reported difficulty in immediately constructing a new house under the Basava Vasathi Yojana has added to the family’s concerns.
With their home, belongings and food grains lost, the family is now facing an uncertain future and is in need of timely assistance and rehabilitation support.
