Udupi: Tension prevailed in Udupi after members of Hindu organisations staged a protest against a religious discourse programme, prompting police to detain 38 individuals to prevent escalation.

According to a release issued by the district police, the situation unfolded during the ongoing “Samadhana Mahotsava”, a religious preaching programme being held from March 20 to 22 at the Christian PU College ground near Mission Compound, under the jurisdiction of the local police station.

Event held with court permission

The programme is being organised by the Fellowship of Udupi District Churches. Authorities confirmed that the event had received permission from the High Court following a writ petition, allowing it to proceed under specified conditions.

The event is scheduled daily from 5.30 pm to 9.30 pm and has drawn participants from various parts of the district.

Objections to invited speaker

The protest was triggered by objections to the participation of Mohan C Lazarus, a pastor from Tamil Nadu who was invited as the special speaker for the programme.

Leaders of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike and other groups alleged that cases had been registered against him in a neighbouring state for remarks perceived as offensive to Hindu deities. They had earlier appealed to the district administration and police not to grant permission for the event.

Protest and police action

On Friday around 5 pm, protesters gathered near Govinda Kalyana Mantapa, where they addressed the media before attempting to march towards the Christian PU College ground, stating their intention to reach the venue of the programme.

Police personnel intervened and stopped the group from proceeding further, citing law and order concerns. In the ensuing action, 38 protesters were taken into custody as a preventive measure.

All detained individuals were later released, police confirmed.

Case registered against protesters

Authorities have registered a criminal case against the 38 individuals at the Udupi town police station. The case has been filed under Section 189(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 112 of the Karnataka Police Act.

Police officials stated that the action was taken to ensure public order and prevent any untoward incidents during the event.

Maintaining communal harmony

The incident highlights the sensitive nature of religious gatherings and the need for careful coordination between organisers, authorities, and community groups. Police presence has been heightened in the area to maintain peace and ensure the programme continues without disruption.

Officials reiterated that any form of protest must adhere to legal procedures and should not disturb public order.

Conclusion

While the situation in Udupi remains under control, the episode underscores the importance of balancing the right to religious expression with maintaining communal harmony. Authorities are expected to remain vigilant as the event concludes, ensuring that law and order are preserved.
