Udupi: The sudden and unannounced removal of Udupi’s Narayana Guru Circle at Bannanje on Sunday morning triggered immediate public backlash, with community leaders and citizens demanding its restoration. The circle was reinstalled at its original site by evening after the uproar grew across social and political circles.
Background of the naming
The Karnataka state government had formally sanctioned the naming of Bannanje Circle after Brahmashree Narayana Guru through an order dated November 16, 2022, based on a resolution passed in a general meeting of the Udupi City Municipality. The move followed Section 211 of the Karnataka Municipalities Act, 1964, leading to the installation of a dedicated circle structure honouring the spiritual leader.
Traffic police action and controversy
Reports suggest that the Udupi Traffic Police initiated the removal, citing traffic congestion due to the narrow roads surrounding the circle. In its place, a smaller traffic island reportedly bearing a “Bank of Baroda” nameplate was installed, sparking further criticism from the public.
Community and political leaders react
Strong objections came from several leaders and organisations.

Praveen M. Poojary, Udupi district president of a local forum, said, “This act is a grave disrespect to Brahmashree Narayana Guru. We demand an explanation from the district administration and will mobilise the community if one is not provided.”
Former Udupi MLA K. Raghupathi Bhat condemned the move, stating, “Those responsible must be identified and action taken. A well-designed Narayana Guru Circle must be constructed by the municipality, failing which we will launch a strong protest.”
Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna demanded arrests, saying, “A decorated circle with a statue of Narayana Guru must be built at Bannanje. Until then, the previously removed circle should be reinstalled.”
Authorities reinstall circle
Amid mounting public pressure, Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar ordered immediate restoration of the circle. In an official statement, he clarified, “The traffic circle named after Narayana Guru at Bannanje was removed due to oversight. It has now been reinstalled at the same location.”
Significance of the incident
The episode highlights the importance of community consultation in civic decisions and the sensitivity associated with landmarks named after revered figures. For Udupi residents, the swift reinstatement was seen not just as a victory for public voice but as a reaffirmation of respect towards Brahmashree Narayana Guru and his contributions to social reform.
