Udupi: Newly installed advanced speed radar cameras operating at six locations across the Udupi district detected 47,709 traffic rule violations within a week, reflecting the scale of traffic offences taking place on district roads. Police said challans have already been issued in 243 cases as authorities continue to monitor vehicle movements and initiate action against violators.
The introduction of the advanced camera system forms part of efforts to strengthen road safety enforcement and improve compliance with traffic regulations.
Nearly four lakh vehicles monitored
According to police data, from May 21 to May 26, the speed radar camera system monitored a total of 3,99,319 vehicles across the district.
During this period, thousands of violations were detected through automated surveillance systems operating round-the-clock.
Officials said the large number of detected violations indicates the capability of the technology to identify offences that may otherwise go unnoticed during conventional enforcement drives.
The system is directly linked to the district control room, allowing officials to continuously monitor vehicle movement and record offences.
Seat belt and helmet violations among highest offences
Police data showed that failure to follow basic safety measures accounted for a major share of the violations detected.
Among the total cases recorded, authorities identified:
- 12,440 cases of not wearing seat belts
- 11,509 cases of riding without helmets
- 2,783 instances of wrong-side driving
- 2,438 cases of triple riding
- 2,346 heavy motor vehicle speed violations
- 1,110 other speed-related offences
Officials noted that the figures highlight continuing concerns regarding road safety compliance among motorists.
The high number of seat belt and helmet violations has raised concerns as these safety measures are considered essential in reducing the severity of injuries during accidents.
Challans issued at six locations
Police have already initiated action against several violators by issuing challans based on evidence generated by the radar system.
According to PSI Ajjal Ibrahim of the Udupi District Control Room, challans issued so far include:
- 29 cases at Trasi in Gangolli
- 36 cases at Nayakanakatte in Byndoor
- 35 cases at Thekkatte in Kota
- 42 cases at Dandatheertha in Kaup
- 59 cases at Uchila in Padubidri
- 34 cases at Doopadakatte in Karkala
Officials stated that action would continue against additional cases after further processing and verification.
System generates instant digital evidence
Police said the speed radar cameras are directly connected to the district control room and function continuously.
Whenever a traffic violation is detected, digital evidence is generated immediately and processed electronically.
Authorities prepare challans using the evidence collected and send them by post to the registered address of the vehicle owner.
Vehicle owners who receive the notices are required to pay the penalty amount by visiting any police station in Udupi district within seven days after receiving the challan.
Cameras detect multiple offences beyond speeding
Officials clarified that the radar camera system is not designed only for detecting over-speeding violations.
Apart from speed-related offences, the cameras are capable of identifying several other traffic violations including triple riding, failure to wear helmets or seat belts, wrong-side driving and the use of mobile phones while driving.
Police believe that the use of technology-based enforcement systems can help improve compliance and encourage safer driving practices among motorists.
With the system now operational, authorities are expected to continue monitoring and expanding measures aimed at reducing traffic violations and improving road safety standards across the district.
