Udupi: Former MLA Raghupati Bhat has accused sitting MLA Yashpal Suvarna of deliberately obstructing the construction of a beachside resort at Badanidiyoor village, alleging personal animosity despite the absence of legal hurdles.

Addressing a press conference at his residence in Udupi on March 21, Bhat stated that his intention behind the project was to promote tourism in the coastal region. He emphasised that he considers himself primarily an entrepreneur rather than a career politician.

Resort project faces prolonged delay

Bhat said he had planned to develop the resort on 1.60 acres of coastal land and had obtained the necessary permissions. However, he alleged that a crucial single layout approval, for which he applied nearly two years ago, has not been granted so far.

According to him, even after approaching the High Court, his application was initially rejected on various grounds. “On February 20, a directive was issued to the Urban Development Authority to grant the single layout approval. Despite this, the approval letter has not been issued even after a month,” he said.

The delay, he claimed, has stalled the project and caused significant uncertainty.

Allegations of political interference

Bhat alleged that the delay is a result of interference by MLA Yashpal Suvarna. “For the past 24 months, he has been creating obstacles due to personal enmity,” Bhat claimed.

Highlighting his own political tenure, he said that during his time as a three-time MLA, he addressed public issues without discrimination. “Now I am facing similar issues myself,” he remarked, expressing frustration over the situation.

He further alleged that the district administration has remained silent on the matter. “Even court orders are not being respected. The Urban Development Commissioner appears to be succumbing to pressure and intimidation,” he added.

Protest announced at Urban Development Authority

As a next step, Bhat announced that he would stage a peaceful protest in front of the Urban Development Authority office on March 23, from 9.30 am to 6 pm.

He stated that the protest would continue until a clear decision is taken. “Either the single layout approval must be granted, or a written rejection should be given. If a rejection is provided, I will withdraw the protest and pursue legal action,” he said.

The planned demonstration is expected to draw attention to the issue and could escalate the political tension in the district.

Tourism potential and broader implications

The proposed resort project was intended to boost tourism in the coastal belt of Udupi district, which is known for its scenic beaches and growing hospitality sector. Delays in approvals for such projects could impact local economic opportunities, including employment and infrastructure development.

At the same time, the allegations have brought focus on governance processes and the functioning of urban development authorities in handling approvals and court directives.

Conclusion

The controversy surrounding the resort project has added a new dimension to local political dynamics in Udupi. With a protest scheduled and allegations of administrative inaction, the coming days are likely to see further developments. The resolution of the issue will depend on how authorities respond to the demands and whether due process is followed transparently.
