Udupi: The 77th Republic Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour at the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium in Ajjarkad, where Udupi district in-charge minister and minister for women and child development, disabled and senior citizens empowerment Laxmi Hebbalkar hoisted the national flag and led the celebrations on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering, Hebbalkar said January 26 marks the implementation of the Constitution of India, a historic milestone that guarantees rights while also placing duties on every citizen. She paid rich tributes to freedom fighters who laid the foundation for an independent and democratic India and urged people to remember their sacrifices.

Call to youth for responsible citizenship

The minister appealed to the youth to uphold moral values and actively contribute to nation-building. She said the future of the country depends on young citizens who respect constitutional principles, promote harmony and work with a sense of responsibility towards society.

She emphasised that unity, discipline and respect for diversity are essential to preserve the democratic fabric of the nation and ensure inclusive growth.

Government initiatives highlighted

Highlighting key initiatives of the state government, Hebbalkar said ‘Akkapade’ centres have been established across all districts and police commissionerates to support women and children facing abuse, neglect or exploitation. These centres provide counselling, legal aid and rehabilitation support, she said.

The minister also noted that more than 100 Bills had been passed in the last two-and-a-half years to address public concerns and strengthen governance. Among them, she referred to the Hate Speech and Hate Crimes Prevention Bill, which aims to curb divisive activities and maintain social harmony.

Honouring achievers and public servants

As part of the celebrations, progressive farmers were felicitated in recognition of their contribution to agriculture and rural development. Scholarships were also distributed to meritorious students, encouraging academic excellence and higher education.

The Republic Day parade featured disciplined contingents from the district police, women police wing, fire and emergency services, home guards, NCC cadets, and scouts and guides representing various schools and colleges. The parade showcased coordination, discipline and a strong sense of national pride.

Cultural programmes showcase unity in diversity

The formal programme concluded with colourful cultural performances presented by students from across the district. The performances reflected India’s rich cultural heritage and the theme of unity in diversity, drawing applause from the audience.
