Kaup: Police on May 15 arrested a rowdy-sheeter and warrant accused who had allegedly been absconding and failing to appear before the court for the past six years. The accused was traced and taken into custody during an operation carried out by police officials.

According to police, the accused had been evading legal proceedings while remaining untraceable despite continued efforts by authorities to locate him.

The arrest was made following sustained efforts by the police team that had been searching for him for several years.

Accused traced and taken into custody

The arrested individual has been identified as Abhijith (34), who was reportedly located at Punjalkatte and subsequently taken into custody by police.

Authorities stated that the accused had been wanted in connection with an earlier case and had been avoiding court proceedings.

Police said the arrest brought an end to a prolonged search operation that had continued for nearly six years.

Further inquiries were carried out after he was taken into custody.

Accused allegedly failed to appear during trial

According to police, the accused had allegedly attempted to outrage the modesty of a woman near Mallaru Pakirankatte in 2016.

Police stated that after the case entered the trial stage, the accused allegedly failed to appear before the court and had remained absconding thereafter.

Authorities said repeated efforts had been made by Kaup police to trace him over the years.

His continued absence from court proceedings resulted in legal action and the issuance of warrants, officials said.

Court remands accused to judicial custody

Following the arrest, the accused was produced before a court in Udupi.

Police stated that the court remanded him to judicial custody till May 25.

Officials further said he has been lodged at the Udupi district prison following the court order.

Further legal proceedings in connection with the case are expected to continue.

Police discover links to other pending cases

During interrogation, police reportedly found that cases had also been registered against the accused at Mysuru Narasimharajapura police station and Bajpe police station.

Officials stated that he had allegedly been absconding in those cases as well.

Police are expected to coordinate with the concerned stations regarding the pending matters.

The operation to trace the accused was conducted under the guidance of Karkala subdivision DySP Vijay Prasad and Kaup Circle Inspector Azmath Ali. Kaup SIs Tejaswi T.I. and Shubhakara (Investigation) led the operation with assistance from staff members Mohammed Rafiq and Raghu.
