Udupi: A 25-year-old rowdy-sheeter and alleged member of the notorious “Garuda Gang” has been detained under the Goonda Act in Udupi district as part of preventive action against habitual offenders.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Alfaz, is a native of Kirimanjeshwar in Byndoor taluk and was reportedly residing in Kundapur. He was taken into preventive custody following orders issued by the District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner on April 24.

Preventive action based on police report

Officials stated that the detention was carried out based on a detailed report submitted by the Superintendent of Police. The move aims to curb the accused’s alleged involvement in repeated criminal activities and maintain public order in the region.

Under the provisions of the Goonda Act, authorities can detain habitual offenders to prevent them from engaging in further unlawful acts that could pose a threat to society.

Multiple cases registered across districts

Police revealed that Mohammed Alfaz has a long criminal record, with cases registered at several police stations including Byndoor, Shirva, Gangolli, Udupi Town, Kundapur Rural and Town, as well as Bhatkal in the neighbouring Uttara Kannada district.

The charges against him include two cases of attempt to murder, one robbery, one attempted robbery, one assault, two cases of unlawful assembly, one kidnapping case, one case related to drug peddling, and another miscellaneous offence—bringing the total number of cases to 10.

Status of cases

According to police records, one of the cases against the accused has resulted in acquittal. Eight cases are currently under trial in various courts, while one case remains under investigation.

Authorities noted that the pattern of repeated offences and the seriousness of the charges prompted the decision to invoke preventive detention under the Goonda Act.

Lodged in Shivamogga Central Prison

Following the detention order, the District Magistrate directed that the accused be lodged at Shivamogga Central Prison.

Officials said that the step is intended to prevent further criminal activity and ensure law and order in Udupi district and surrounding areas.

Crackdown on habitual offenders

Police sources indicated that such actions are part of a broader effort to crack down on habitual offenders and organised groups involved in criminal activities. The alleged link of the accused to the “Garuda Gang” is also being examined as part of ongoing investigations.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to taking strict action against individuals with repeated criminal records to safeguard public safety.

Conclusion

The detention of Mohammed Alfaz under the Goonda Act underscores the administration’s focus on preventive policing and maintaining law and order in Udupi district. With multiple cases pending against him, officials believe the move will help curb potential criminal activities and send a strong message against repeat offenders.
