Udupi: A Russian national who was found collapsed and in a helpless condition on the Kallianpur–Santhekatte service road was produced before the district court and later handed over to the Goa police, as a criminal case against him is currently under trial in Goa.

The foreign national was rescued by social worker Nityananda Olakadu, who admitted him to the District Hospital in Ajjarkad and informed the City police.

Tourist found without valid documents

During the police inquiry, officials found that the Russian national’s entry permit had expired and his travel document had become inactive.

Police also learnt that a case against him was pending trial in Goa. As the tourist was unwell, he was provided medical treatment at the District Hospital in Ajjarkad.

During his stay at the hospital, the foreign national reportedly went missing. According to the details, he left the hospital out of fear over the criminal case pending against him in Goa.

Police later traced him wandering in the city, took him into custody and admitted him to the hospital again for treatment.

Rehabilitation centre provides assistance

Following directions from Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, arrangements were made for the foreign national to recuperate at Hosabelaku Rehabilitation Centre in Karkala after his health improved.

The authorities also facilitated a phone conversation between the foreign national and his mother in Russia.

At the rehabilitation centre, Tanula Tarun, the coordinator, provided him with food and other assistance during his stay.

Two police personnel were deployed to ensure his security.

Handed over to Goa police

After completing the necessary procedures, the Russian national was produced before the district court. He was subsequently handed over to the Goa police, in view of the pending case against him in Goa.

The assistance extended by the social worker, hospital staff, rehabilitation centre and police helped ensure that the foreign national received medical care and support before being transferred to the authorities concerned.
