Udupi: A massive influx of sardines, locally known as Boothayi fish, along the shores of Hejamadi on Monday evening turned the quiet coastline into a scene of frenzy and excitement, drawing scores of fishermen, traders and local residents eager to collect the unexpected bounty. What began as a routine fishing effort soon transformed into what locals described as a “once-in-a-season spectacle”.

Members of the Veeranjaneya Kairampani Fund fishing team from Ermala arrived at the Hejamadi coast in the evening and cast their nets into the sea. As they began hauling in their catch, large numbers of small-sized sardines were swept ashore by the force of the waves, creating a rare sight that quickly caught the attention of people in nearby areas.

Fishing nets haul in massive catch

The fishing team reportedly netted close to 20 tonnes of sardines within a short span of time. Fishermen said the sheer volume of fish put immense pressure on the nets, causing some of them to tear. While a portion of the catch escaped back into the sea through the damaged nets, a significant quantity was carried ashore by the strong waves.

Fishermen described the catch as unusually large for this time of the season. Sardines generally move in shoals, but such a massive concentration close to the shoreline is considered rare. Some fishermen attributed the phenomenon to favourable sea conditions, while others said shifting currents may have driven the shoals closer to land.

Crowds rush to the beach at night

As news of the sardine surge spread rapidly through word of mouth and social media, hundreds of people from nearby villages and towns rushed to the Hejamadi beach, even late into the night. Families, groups of youths and elderly residents were seen collecting fish by hand, filling sacks and baskets under torchlight and vehicle headlights.

The beach took on the atmosphere of an open-air market, with people negotiating prices and sorting fish right on the sand. Several traders arrived on the spot and began purchasing sardines directly from collectors and fishermen, saving the effort of transporting the catch to distant harbours or markets.

Local residents said such scenes are rare and recalled only a few similar instances in the past when fish had washed ashore in such large numbers.

High demand from fishmeal units

Sardines are in high demand among fishmeal and fish oil manufacturing units, and this sudden availability triggered immediate commercial activity. Several tonnes of sardines were loaded onto vehicles and transported to fishmeal units for processing.

Traders said the size of the fish made them particularly suitable for fishmeal production, which ensured steady demand despite the sudden glut. The rapid movement of fish from the shore to processing units also helped prevent spoilage, as sardines are highly perishable.

By Tuesday morning, the impact of the catch was evident in local markets in and around Hejamadi, with sardines becoming the most talked-about commodity of the day.

Prices stabilise at village markets

By Tuesday, sardines from the Hejamadi catch were selling at around ₹350 per kilogram in nearby village markets. While some consumers expected prices to fall sharply due to the large catch, traders said steady demand from fishmeal units and retail buyers helped keep prices relatively firm.

Vendors said many households took advantage of the availability to buy sardines in bulk, either for immediate consumption or for drying and preservation. Sardines are a staple in coastal cuisine and are valued for their nutritional benefits, making them popular among consumers across income groups.

Market sources said prices could fluctuate over the next few days depending on further landings and weather conditions at sea.

Locals call it a rare spectacle

Residents of Hejamadi and surrounding villages described the event as a rare and memorable occurrence. Many said they had never seen such a large number of fish washing ashore in a single evening.

“The entire beach was alive. People were running, collecting fish, and traders were bargaining right there on the sand. It felt like a festival,” said a local resident who visited the beach with his family.

Fishermen too expressed satisfaction, saying the catch provided both income and recognition for the fishing team. However, they also cautioned that such natural phenomena are unpredictable and cannot be relied upon as a regular source of livelihood.

Conclusion

The sudden sardine surge along the Hejamadi coast offered a brief but remarkable glimpse into the unpredictable abundance of the sea. While it brought excitement, income and bustling activity to the shoreline and local markets, fishermen and residents alike acknowledged it as a rare event rather than a routine occurrence. For many, the night will be remembered as one when the sea generously shared its bounty, turning an ordinary coastline into a hub of action and celebration.
