On July 15, the wall of the Government Higher Primary School in Doddanagudde, Udupi, collapsed due to heavy rainfall, narrowly avoiding a potential disaster. The incident occurred in the kitchen area, where rainwater soaked the wall, causing a portion to give way. Thankfully, no students were harmed as the collapse buried kitchen utensils, gas cylinders, and over 40 steel plates used for student meals under mud.
The school’s history reveals that an Anganwadi, constructed in 1990 under a loan scheme, had a portion repurposed for kitchen use when a new building was erected on the premises. Over time, deterioration led to the collapse of this section, prompting the temporary relocation of the kitchen to the nearby school hall. Additionally, several rooms in the school are now experiencing leaking ceilings.
Nirmala, the headmistress, expressed relief that the collapse occurred when no teachers, cooks, or helpers were present in the immediate area, averting a potential catastrophe. Geetha, a senior staff member, highlighted recent efforts by the school’s alumni association to outline development plans, emphasizing the need for the Education Department to provide compensation and repair assistance.
The incident underscores the critical need for infrastructure maintenance in educational institutions, especially during adverse weather conditions, to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
