Udupi: An accused who had been absconding for six years without appearing before the court was arrested at Haldipur in Honnavar on September 5, following efforts by the Malpe police to trace him.
The accused has been identified as Srinivas Sridhar Shetty, a resident of Sirsi taluk. He was arrested by warrant staff Vishwanath H and Mohammed Rafi under the guidance of Malpe police station officer Anil Kumar D.
Accused arrested following warrant
Police traced and arrested Shetty at Haldipur in Honnavar after he remained away from the legal proceedings for several years.
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before the court. The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody, after which he was sent to Hiriyadka Jail.
The arrest was carried out as part of efforts to execute the pending warrant and bring the accused before the court in connection with the case registered against him.
Case registered over alleged life threat
A case was registered against Shetty in 2021 for allegedly issuing a life threat to a businessman from Malpe.
The case has been proceeding before the court, but the accused had reportedly failed to appear and remained untraceable for six years.
His arrest now enables the court proceedings to continue in accordance with the law.
Other criminal cases registered
Police said several other cases have also been registered against Shetty at police stations in Sirsi and Honnavar.
These include cases related to assault, attempt to murder, ganja and house theft. The cases are currently under trial before the court.
The police are continuing to pursue the legal proceedings connected with these cases, while the accused remains in judicial custody following the latest arrest.

The arrest was carried out by warrant staff Vishwanath H and Mohammed Rafi under the supervision and guidance of Malpe police station officer Anil Kumar D.
Tracing accused persons who remain away from court proceedings is part of police efforts to ensure that pending cases progress through the judicial system.
The arrest at Haldipur brings to an end the accused’s prolonged period of absence from the court process in the 2021 case. He has now been produced before the court and sent to judicial custody at Hiriyadka Jail.
