Udupi: The suicide of a Nelyady-based entrepreneur has triggered a wave of allegations and counter-allegations, with his wife strongly denying any role in the incident and seeking a fair investigation. The case has drawn attention in the district as both sides continue to make serious claims against each other.
Addressing a press conference at the Udupi Press Club on April 2, Soumya Shetty stated that she was not responsible for the death of her husband, Sudeep. She said she would reveal the truth behind the allegations made against her, particularly those put forward by members of Sudeep’s family and another individual, Venu Shetty.
Family members level serious accusations
Following Sudeep’s death, his parents publicly accused Soumya of being responsible for the extreme step. His father, Damodar, alleged that she played a role in his son’s death, while his mother, Pushpalatha Shetty, accused Soumya of creating disturbances in Nelyady and held her accountable.
In addition to the family’s claims, Venu Shetty, who described himself as a former acquaintance of Soumya, also made several allegations against her, further intensifying the controversy surrounding the case.
The accusations led to widespread discussion locally, with calls for clarity and investigation into the circumstances leading to Sudeep’s death.
Soumya refutes allegations, files complaint
Rejecting all accusations, Soumya Shetty said she had filed a complaint at the Karkala police station against Sudeep’s family members and Venu Shetty for making what she described as baseless allegations.
She denied claims that she had created a ruckus in Nelyady or harmed Sudeep in any way. “I am not responsible for Sudeep’s suicide,” she asserted, adding that she was ready to cooperate with authorities and present evidence to support her claims.
Soumya explained that she had gone to Nelyady after being unable to reach Sudeep, as his mobile phone was switched off. She admitted to raising her voice during the visit but said it was out of emotional distress. According to her, CCTV footage could be examined to verify that no disturbance was caused.
Claims of family pressure and personal stress
Soumya further alleged that Sudeep had been facing issues within his family and was under considerable stress. She stated that he had visited her earlier to discuss marriage but faced problems after returning to his parental home.
She claimed that Sudeep had confided in her about a lack of support from his family and ongoing tensions. “I suspect that something happened at his house which led him to take this extreme step. His family members may have instigated him,” she said.
She also mentioned that Sudeep had financial liabilities for the past eight to nine years, which could have contributed to his mental stress.
Allegations against Venu Shetty
Responding to allegations made by Venu Shetty, Soumya stated that while both were associated with theatre activities, she did not share a close relationship with him. She claimed he had approached her with a proposal earlier, which she declined.
Soumya further alleged that Venu Shetty had played a role in creating misunderstandings within Sudeep’s family. According to her, Sudeep had informed her that Venu was influencing his family and had contacted his father multiple times.
She maintained that these actions may have worsened tensions and contributed to the situation.
Call for fair investigation
Soumya reiterated that she has submitted all relevant details in her complaint and urged the police to conduct an impartial and thorough investigation into the case.
The incident continues to remain under investigation, with authorities expected to examine all claims, including those made by both the family and Soumya. The outcome of the probe will be crucial in determining the circumstances that led to the tragic death.
