Udupi: A series of cultural and devotional competitions organised as part of the Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations commenced on Saturday under the auspices of Sri Shiroor Math, the Paryaya Peetha of Udupi Sri Krishna Math. The competitions were inaugurated by Sri Vedavardhana Theertha Sripada, the Paryaya Peethadhipathi, with enthusiastic participation from devotees and contestants across different age groups.

The competitions were formally inaugurated by Sri Vedavardhana Theertha Sripada, marking the beginning of the Janmashtami celebrations organised by Sri Shiroor Math.

The annual competitions are aimed at promoting devotional music, cultural traditions and religious values associated with the celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth.

Devotees and participants gathered in large numbers for the inaugural programme.

Dasara Pada singing competition held

The first day’s events featured a Dasara Pada singing competition, conducted in various age categories.

Participants from different age groups showcased their musical talent by rendering devotional compositions dedicated to Lord Krishna and other deities. The performances reflected the rich tradition of Haridasa devotional literature and were well received by the audience.

The organisers said the enthusiastic participation highlighted the continued interest among young and senior devotees in preserving Karnataka’s devotional music heritage.

More cultural events planned

The Janmashtami celebrations will continue over the coming days with a variety of cultural and religious competitions.

The programme includes events designed to encourage participation by children, youth and adults, while promoting spiritual awareness and traditional art forms associated with the festival.

Organisers expect large participation from devotees and cultural enthusiasts throughout the celebration period.
