Udupi: The city is set to witness a major spiritual and cultural milestone on January 18, when the pontiff of Puthige Mutt, Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swami, will ascend the revered Sarvajna Peetha for the fourth time. The ceremonial ascent will take place after he receives the Akshaya Pathre from the outgoing Paryaya seer of Krishnapur Mutt, Sri Vidyasagara Theertha Swami, marking the formal commencement of the Paryaya Mahotsava.
The Paryaya ceremony, a centuries-old tradition associated with the Sri Krishna Mutt, is one of the most significant religious events in the coastal region. It involves the transfer of administrative and spiritual responsibilities of the Sri Krishna Mutt to the incoming pontiff for a two-year term. Preparations for the grand event are in full swing, with religious rituals, cultural programmes and large-scale arrangements underway to accommodate lakhs of devotees.
Cultural and spiritual programmes underway
As part of the Paryaya celebrations, cultural and spiritual programmes are already being held at two prominent venues. Performances and discourses are taking place at the Kanakadasa Vedike set up at the Rajangana parking lot and at the Ananda Theertha Vedike near Car Street.
These venues have been drawing large crowds every evening, with devotional music, classical dance, Harikatha and religious talks forming the core of the programmes. Organisers said the events are aimed at highlighting the rich spiritual heritage of the region while providing a platform for artistes and scholars.
Devotees from different parts of the state and neighbouring regions have begun arriving in the city to take part in the festivities, adding to the vibrant atmosphere ahead of the main Paryaya day.
Horakanike pours in from temples and devotees
Puthige Mutt Deewan Prasanna Acharya said offerings, known as Horakanike, are arriving in large quantities from temples, donors and devotees. These offerings include rice, vegetables, coconuts and cash, reflecting the collective participation of devotees in the festival.
He said the storehouse located adjacent to the Rajangana parking area is already filled with grocery items. “The response from devotees has been overwhelming. The provisions collected will be used to prepare food for lakhs of devotees expected to attend the two-day Paryaya festivities,” he said.
The Anna Dana, or free distribution of food, is a key component of the Paryaya celebrations. Volunteers from various mutts and local organisations have been roped in to assist with cooking, serving and managing the crowds during the event.
City decked up for Paryaya Mahotsava
Extensive beautification and infrastructure work has been taken up across the city in view of the Paryaya Mahotsava. Decorative lighting is being installed along the roads connecting Udupi to Manipal and from Udupi to Danda Theertha in Kaup to welcome devotees and dignitaries.
Stalls selling religious items, food, books and handicrafts have been set up along Car Street and in and around the Rajangana area. The Sri Krishna Mutt and surrounding structures have received a fresh coat of paint, enhancing the visual appeal of the temple complex.
Car Street, the focal point of the Paryaya celebrations, is being adorned with flowers and traditional basket lamps, creating a festive and devotional ambience. Authorities have also made arrangements for traffic management, parking and security to ensure smooth conduct of the event.
Foreign delegates to attend celebrations
Adding an international dimension to the Paryaya Mahotsava, several foreign delegates have confirmed their participation. Among them are Dr William F Vedley, vice-president of the World Religious and Spiritual Institute in the United States, and Rev Kosho Niwano, president-designate of Rissho Kosei-Kai, a prominent Buddhist organisation based in Japan.
Their participation reflects the global recognition of the Paryaya tradition and its message of spiritual harmony and inclusiveness. Organisers said interactions with foreign delegates would include discussions on interfaith dialogue, peace and the relevance of spiritual values in modern society.
Significance of the fourth Paryaya
Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swami’s ascent to the Sarvajna Peetha for the fourth time is considered a significant moment in the history of the Puthige Mutt. Senior scholars and devotees said it underscores the continuity of the Dvaita philosophy propagated by Sri Madhwacharya and the enduring relevance of the Paryaya system.
The Akshaya Pathre, symbolically handed over by the outgoing seer, represents the responsibility of ensuring uninterrupted Anna Dana and temple administration. The ritual transfer signifies trust, tradition and the seamless transition of duties between mutts.
Conclusion
With elaborate arrangements, strong public participation and the presence of national and international guests, the upcoming Paryaya Mahotsava is set to be a landmark event. As Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swami ascends the Sarvajna Peetha on January 18, the celebrations will reaffirm the spiritual legacy of the Sri Krishna Mutt and reinforce the city’s status as a major centre of faith, culture and devotion.
