Kundapur: Three persons have been arrested after a tipper lorry carrying soil allegedly rammed into another tipper and hit a scooter carrying two college students at Balkur in Kundapur taluk on Friday, October 30.

The arrested persons have been identified as Nagraj and Ratwij, the drivers of the two tipper lorries, and Ajith Shetty, the owner of the site from where the soil was excavated.

The accident occurred in the morning near Vishnumurthy Temple in Balkur village, within the limits of Kundapur Rural Police Station, along State Highway 52.

Tipper lorry hits scooter after collision

According to the police complaint, two tipper lorries carrying soil were travelling from the Kundapur side and were allegedly being driven recklessly.

When the driver of the leading tipper slowed down because a KSRTC bus was moving ahead, the tipper coming from behind allegedly rammed into it at high speed.

Following the collision, the driver of the second tipper reportedly steered the vehicle towards the extreme right side of the road. The lorry then hit a scooter travelling from Kandlur towards Basrur.

Two college students were riding the scooter at the time of the accident.

Two students injured

The injured students have been identified as T K Mohammed Shayan and Mohammed Rayan. Both sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted to a hospital for treatment.

The incident raised concerns over reckless driving by heavy vehicles on the highway, particularly when transporting construction materials.

Soil transported without permit

Police investigations revealed that the tipper lorry involved in the incident was transporting soil without the required permit.

The case involves both the road accident and the alleged unauthorised transportation of soil from the excavation site.

Kundapur Rural Police registered a case under Crime No. 61/2026. The charges include Sections 110, 303(2) and 238 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 4(1)(A) and 21(4) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, and Sections 134(a) and 134(b) of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act.

Three arrested

Following the incident, police arrested both tipper lorry drivers, Nagraj and Ratwij, along with site owner Ajith Shetty.

Further investigation is under way to establish the circumstances of the accident and examine the alleged illegal transportation of soil.
