Udupi: Police arrested three persons for allegedly transporting cattle illegally and in a cruel manner near the Hosangadi check post under the Amasebailu Police Station limits.
According to police, the operation was led by PSI Ashok Kumar, who was on night patrol within the jurisdiction. Personnel stationed at the Hosangadi check post intercepted a vehicle arriving from the Hulikal Ghat side for inspection.
Cattle found in cruel condition
During the inspection, officials discovered two bulls tied in a cruel manner inside the vehicle. Upon questioning, the occupants reportedly admitted that the cattle were being transported for slaughter with the intention of selling the meat.
The estimated value of the two bulls is around Rs 1 lakh, while the vehicle used for transportation is valued at approximately Rs 4 lakh.
Escort vehicle raises suspicion
Police also noticed a white car, valued at about Rs 5 lakh, following the cattle-laden vehicle from the Hulikal side towards Hosangadi. Suspecting that the car was escorting the illegal transport, officers intercepted it as well.
However, the driver and another occupant of the car reportedly fled the scene after stopping the vehicle. One person in the car was apprehended and taken into custody.
Case registered under multiple sections
The police seized the cattle, both vehicles, and the individuals involved. A case was registered at Amasebailu Police Station under multiple legal provisions, including Sections 4, 5, 7, and 12 of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020; Section 11(1)(d) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act; and Section 66(1) read with 192(A) of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act.
Accused produced before court
Later, police arrested Mustaq Hussain Saab Nadaf (29) and Saleem Hussain Saab Nadaf (33), both residents of Ramdurg in Belagavi district, along with Nadeem Abdul Khader (34), a resident of Kelapete in Shiroor, Byndoor taluk.
All three accused were produced before a court, police said.
