Udupi: A tourist was found dead while seated on a chair inside a lodge room near the old government bus stand, after staff grew suspicious when he did not step out for an extended period. Police said the exact cause of death is yet to be established, though a medical condition is suspected.

According to preliminary information, the incident came to light when lodge staff noticed that the guest had remained inside his room for unusually long hours and was not responding to routine knocks or calls. Growing concerned about his safety, the staff opened the room using a spare key and found him motionless on a chair.

They immediately alerted the police, who arrived at the spot and began inquest and legal formalities.

Deceased identified as Davanagere resident

The deceased has been identified as Mahantesh M G, a resident of Davanagere district. Initial enquiries revealed that he had travelled to the coastal region alone and had checked into the lodge near the old bus stand area.

Police said he had informed his family before leaving home that he was going to a hospital in Mangaluru. It is not yet clear whether he had a pre-existing medical condition or had undergone any consultation prior to the incident.

Family members were informed soon after the body was discovered and later reached the city.

No signs of disturbance in room

Investigators who examined the lodge room said there were no immediate signs of struggle, forced entry or disturbance at the scene. The body was found seated on a chair, and personal belongings were reported to be intact.

Based on the initial scene assessment, officers suspect that the death may have occurred due to a sudden health-related episode. However, they said no conclusion will be drawn until the post-mortem examination report is received.

Police personnel documented the scene, recorded statements from lodge staff and collected basic details regarding the guest’s check-in time and activities.

Police conduct inquest in presence of family

City Police Station sub-inspector Narayan, assistant sub-inspector Harish and head constable Ashalatha conducted the inquest and related legal procedures. These were carried out in the presence of the deceased’s wife and brother, who confirmed his identity.

Officials said all mandatory procedures under law were followed, including preparation of inquest records and witness documentation before shifting the body.

The police also verified lodge records, identity proof submitted at the time of check-in and contact details provided by the deceased.

Body shifted for post-mortem

After completion of spot formalities, the body was shifted to the post-mortem centre at Ajjarakadu District Hospital for autopsy. The examination is expected to determine the precise cause and approximate time of death.

Social worker Nityananda Volakad assisted authorities and the family in transporting the body to the hospital mortuary and coordinating immediate arrangements.

Police said the post-mortem findings will play a key role in deciding the further course of investigation.

Case registered, probe under way

A case of unnatural death has been registered at the city police station, and further investigation is under progress. Officers are verifying travel history, medical background and last phone contacts of the deceased as part of routine procedure.

Statements from lodge employees and nearby persons are also being recorded to establish the timeline from check-in to discovery. CCTV footage from the premises and surrounding area may be reviewed if required.

Officials emphasised that at present there is no indication of foul play, but all angles will be examined until medical reports are received.

Conclusion

The sudden death of the tourist in a lodge room has prompted a standard police investigation, with authorities awaiting medical confirmation of the cause. Police have appealed to travellers with health conditions to keep families informed of their movements and maintain regular contact while on solo trips.
