In a tragic accident on Tuesday, two ninth-grade students from Byndoor Government High School, Safwan Shanu (14) and Nagendra Devadiga, drowned in a pond near Byndoor amid heavy rains. Safwan, originally from Shiroor, had been living in Byndoor for four years. He left home to play around 4:00 PM, but when he didn’t return by evening, his family became worried and filed a missing person’s report with the Byndoor Police.

Later that night, the boys’ bicycles, clothes, and slippers were found near a pond close to the Byndoor Police Station, leading to fears that they had drowned while swimming. A search operation was launched by the police and fire brigade, but the heavy rainfall and darkness hampered their efforts.

A team of divers from Bhatkal, including Ikrash Motiya, Ikruma Motiya, Abdul Basit Muallim, Ismail Shabandri, and Hassan KM, arrived to assist with the search. Braving the bad weather, the divers recovered Safwan’s body at around 1:30 AM, followed shortly by Nagendra’s.

The bodies were sent to Byndoor Government Hospital for post-mortem, and will be returned to their families. Byndoor Police Inspector expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Bhatkal divers for their late-night efforts.
