Udupi: The district administration has dismissed two outsourced staff members in connection with the unauthorised cutting of trees within the premises of the Udupi Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
The action follows an internal inquiry into the incident, which came to light through media reports on April 27. Officials said the tree felling was carried out despite explicit instructions prohibiting any such activity.
Background linked to earlier incident
The issue gained attention after the recent death of a staff member at the deputy commissioner’s office premises. The individual reportedly came into contact with an electric wire while plucking mangoes, prompting authorities to inspect the site.
Following the incident, directions had been issued to the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company to submit an estimate for either raising the high-tension power lines or shifting them underground. Importantly, these measures were to be implemented without causing any damage to existing trees in the परिसर.
Tree cutting despite clear orders
However, the administration later learned through media coverage that several trees within the premises had been cut. The development triggered concern among officials, as it directly violated earlier instructions.
An inquiry was initiated to ascertain responsibility. During the investigation, it was found that the officer in charge of maintaining the district office complex had failed to inform the administration about the tree cutting.
Disciplinary action initiated
Additional Deputy Commissioner Abid Gadyal stated that the failure to report the matter amounted to dereliction of duty.
He confirmed that two outsourced staff members working under the District Complex Maintenance Committee had been dismissed from service for their role in the incident.
Further, a departmental inquiry has been ordered against the member secretary of the core committee responsible for the maintenance of the district office complex. Authorities indicated that strict action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
Administration takes serious view
Officials emphasised that the unauthorised cutting of trees, especially within government premises, is a serious violation. The administration reiterated that clear instructions had been issued earlier to protect greenery while addressing safety concerns related to high-tension power lines.
The incident has also raised broader concerns about coordination between departments and adherence to administrative directives.
Conclusion
The dismissal of staff and initiation of departmental action underline the administration’s firm stance on enforcing accountability. The outcome of the ongoing inquiry is expected to determine further responsibility and ensure such incidents are not repeated.
