Udupi: The Udupi City unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a torchlight procession and protest march on Wednesday evening to highlight problems faced by residents due to alleged failures in electricity supply and maintenance by MESCOM.
The procession began near Udupi Board High School, proceeded along K M Marg and passed Diana Circle before concluding near the MESCOM office. BJP leaders and party workers participated in the march, demanding immediate action to address persistent electricity-related grievances in the district.
The protest was organised to draw attention to issues affecting households, businesses and other electricity consumers across Udupi district.
MLA highlights frequent power cuts and low voltage
Addressing the protest meeting held after the procession, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said residents were facing considerable hardship due to several problems associated with the functioning of MESCOM, the electricity distribution company serving the region.
He cited frequent power cuts, low voltage and erratic electricity supply among the major concerns raised by consumers. He also pointed to a shortage of transformers, inadequate maintenance and a lack of staff as factors contributing to the difficulties faced by the public.
According to the MLA, these issues have affected the reliability and quality of electricity supply, prompting the party to demand urgent intervention by the state government.
BJP demands immediate corrective measures
The BJP leaders called on the state government to take immediate steps to resolve the problems associated with MESCOM’s operations in Udupi district.
They demanded improvements in electricity distribution, adequate availability of transformers, better maintenance of the power infrastructure and measures to address staff shortages. The party also stressed the need to ensure a reliable supply of quality electricity to consumers.
The protest highlighted the need for the authorities to respond to complaints about interruptions and fluctuations in power supply. The BJP called for corrective action to prevent residents from continuing to face difficulties due to these issues.
