Udupi: In view of the onset of the southwest monsoon and the likelihood of heavy rainfall in the coming months, the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) has imposed a complete ban on road digging and excavation activities within its jurisdiction until the end of September. The move aims to prevent damage to roads, ensure smooth traffic movement and avoid inconvenience to the public during the monsoon season.
No permission for road excavation
According to a press release issued by the office of the municipal commissioner, no permissions will be granted for road excavation or digging works during the ban period.
The restriction applies to all agencies, contractors and individuals seeking to undertake excavation work on roads falling under the jurisdiction of the Udupi City Municipal Council. Officials stated that the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure considering the ongoing monsoon and the possibility of road damage caused by excavation activities.
Strict action against violators
The municipal administration has warned that strict action will be initiated against anyone found unnecessarily digging, cutting or damaging roads during the ban period.
Authorities have made it clear that violations of the directive will attract action under the applicable rules and regulations. Officials said the ban is intended to protect public infrastructure and minimise disruptions caused by road works during adverse weather conditions.
The civic body has also instructed its officials to closely monitor road conditions and ensure compliance with the order.
Measure aimed at public convenience
Road excavation during the monsoon often leads to waterlogging, damaged road surfaces and traffic disruptions. Civic authorities believe the temporary prohibition will help maintain road safety and reduce inconvenience to commuters and residents.
The decision comes at a time when Udupi district is experiencing regular rainfall following the arrival of the southwest monsoon. Local authorities are focusing on preventive measures to avoid monsoon-related problems and ensure the smooth functioning of civic services.
Public urged to cooperate
The municipal commissioner has appealed to residents, contractors, utility agencies and other stakeholders to cooperate fully with the administration in implementing the restriction.
Officials stressed that public cooperation is essential for safeguarding road infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted movement during the rainy season. The administration has urged citizens to report any unauthorised road excavation activities noticed within the city limits.
Monsoon preparedness underway
The ban on road excavation forms part of the broader monsoon preparedness measures being undertaken by the Udupi City Municipal Council. Civic authorities are continuing efforts to maintain drainage systems, monitor vulnerable areas and address issues arising from heavy rainfall.
With the restriction set to remain in force until the end of September, officials hope the measure will help preserve road quality and enhance public safety throughout the monsoon season.
