Udupi: A traffic police constable in Udupi was reportedly threatened and physically assaulted by a scooter rider who identified himself as a lawyer, during a routine traffic duty near the Karavali Junction flyover on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 11:35 am when constable Dundappa Madar (35), stationed at the busy junction, was managing traffic flow due to congestion. As he signaled vehicles from Bannanje to halt, a man on a scooter allegedly stopped and began questioning the officer’s authority.
According to the complaint, the rider said, “I am an advocate. You’re not from here. There’s no need for you to manage duties in our district—we can handle our own affairs.” He then allegedly used derogatory language toward the constable.
When Madar tried to clarify the situation, the accused reportedly dismounted from the scooter and struck him on the left side of his neck, issuing threats to his life before fleeing the scene.
The accused was later identified as K Rajendra. A case has been filed at the Udupi Town Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 115(2), 121(1), 132, 351(2), and 352, relating to criminal intimidation, assault on a public servant, and abuse.
The incident has raised concern among law enforcement officials over the growing hostility faced by frontline police personnel during duty.
