UDUPI: Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari K has instructed officials to prioritize scientific safety improvements at identified accident-prone areas in the district. During the district Road Safety Committee meeting at Rajathadri on Monday, the DC highlighted the urgent need to enhance safety at 20 high-risk ‘black spots’ along national highways, identified between 2020 and 2022.
The Commissioner proposed essential infrastructure upgrades, including pedestrian crossings, warning signs, high-mast lighting, blinkers, crash barriers, and speed humps. The installation of foot overbridges, efficient drainage, and MS railings will also help mitigate risks, while drivers’ adherence to road safety rules and speed limits remains essential in preventing accidents.
Kumari emphasized a scientific approach to implementing road humps and advised temporary road solutions to ensure safe, uninterrupted traffic flow during highway construction projects. Additionally, she directed that KSRTC buses operating from the Kundapur unit adhere to designated stops, avoiding passenger drop-offs along highways.
CMC and Public Works Department officials were urged to use Karnataka State Road Safety Authority funds effectively to enhance safety in high-risk zones, while the police were tasked with enforcing accident prevention within their station limits.
The meeting was attended by SP Dr. Arun K, NHAI Project Director Abdulla Javed Azmi, CMC Commissioner Rayappa, and other officials.
