Udupi: Devotees and followers of Balekudru Math staged a protest near the Math, demanding that Vasudeva Sadashivashrama Swamiji step down from the pontifical seat over allegations linked to an audio recording that has circulated on social media.
Outrage over viral audio recording
The protest followed the circulation of an audio recording that devotees allege features a conversation between the Swamiji and members of the Math staff. The protesters alleged that the recording contains derogatory references to the Sringeri Jagadguru and objectionable and abusive remarks concerning Hariharapura Sri, who is said to have administered the Sanyasa Diksha to the Swamiji.
The allegations have caused concern among a section of devotees and followers of the Math, who sought clarification over the contents of the recording and other issues raised in it.
The audio reportedly refers to the alienation of precious articles belonging to the Math, including jewellery and Rudrakshis, besides mentioning the distribution of funds. Devotees have also alleged that the recording contains objectionable references to the original lineage of Balekudru Math and the installation of deities within the Math.
The allegations made by the protesters have not been independently established, and the contents and authenticity of the audio recording would require verification.
Objections over succession
Another major issue raised during the protest concerned the appointment of the Swamiji’s successor.
According to the protesting devotees, the successor was appointed despite a court stay order concerning the induction of a disciple. They questioned the propriety of proceeding with the appointment while the matter was under judicial consideration.
The devotees also alleged that objectionable remarks were made against a group of disciples who had earlier come forward for mediation. They said the issues surrounding the Math should be addressed transparently and through an appropriate process.
Devotees demand resignation
During the protest, devotees expressed their dissatisfaction with the response to the controversy and demanded that the pontiff relinquish the seat.
The protesters blew conch shells and rang gongs near the Math as part of their demonstration. They maintained that an apology issued through social media would not be sufficient to address the concerns raised by them.
The protesters called for a more comprehensive response to the allegations surrounding the audio recording, the Math’s assets, succession-related matters and the remarks allegedly made against spiritual figures and disciples.
The controversy has consequently triggered a public protest among a section of Balekudru Math followers, with devotees seeking clarity on the allegations and demanding action over issues they consider serious.
