Udupi: Amid continuous rainfall across the Udupi district, City Municipal Council (CMC) Commissioner Mahantesh Hangargi said the city currently has sufficient drinking water reserves and adequate backup arrangements, with no shortage situation being reported at present. He also stated that departments have been directed to remain prepared to handle emergencies arising from heavy rainfall and thunderstorm conditions during the monsoon season.
The remarks came while addressing issues related to monsoon preparedness and the city’s readiness to respond to weather-related situations.
Departments placed on alert for monsoon response
Speaking on preparedness measures, the Commissioner said the municipal administration had already alerted all departments to remain ready for emergency situations that could arise due to heavy rain and strong winds.
Authorities have instructed concerned officials to maintain constant monitoring during adverse weather conditions and respond quickly whenever complaints are received from the public.
The administration stated that coordination among departments has been strengthened to ensure prompt action whenever required during the ongoing monsoon period.
Fallen trees cleared after complaints
Mahantesh Hangargi said complaints regarding fallen trees had recently been received from the Parkala and Kinnimulki areas due to sudden strong winds accompanying the rainfall.
According to him, municipal teams were immediately deployed after receiving the information, and the fallen trees were removed without delay.
He noted that quick response mechanisms are being followed to prevent disruptions to traffic movement and public inconvenience during the rainy season.
The Commissioner added that despite continuous rainfall over the past several days, no major incidents involving drainage overflow or damage to houses have been reported within city limits so far.
Drainage cleaning work nearing completion
The Commissioner stated that preventive work had been taken up in advance as part of monsoon preparedness measures.
He said most drainage systems across the city had already been cleaned and remaining work on open drains was continuing.
Regular maintenance and cleaning of drainage systems are considered important to avoid waterlogging and ensure smooth flow of rainwater during periods of heavy rainfall.
Officials have also been instructed to continue monitoring vulnerable areas where water accumulation could occur.
Authorities believe these precautionary measures will help reduce the possibility of flooding and minimise inconvenience to residents.
No water shortage or rationing likely
Addressing concerns over possible water shortages, Mahantesh Hangargi said there was currently no reason for concern.
He stated that he, along with ministers, had visited the Baje Dam and assessed the present water storage levels.
Based on the existing water availability, he said the city has sufficient reserves and there is no possibility of implementing water rationing measures at present.
The Commissioner noted that adequate backup arrangements are also in place to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply if weather conditions change.
With rainfall continuing in several parts of the district, civic authorities said they would maintain regular monitoring and continue preparedness measures to ensure that essential services remain unaffected during the monsoon season.
