Udupi: Lawyers staged a symbolic protest at the Udupi District Court complex on Tuesday, condemning the assault on an advocate within the limits of Bengaluru’s Whitefield Police Station and demanding better protection for members of the legal fraternity.
The protesting advocates boycotted court proceedings and expressed their strong displeasure over the increasing incidents of violence against lawyers. They urged the State government to take the issue seriously and ensure adequate security for advocates while discharging their professional duties.
Lawyers Demand Protection from Government
Addressing the gathering, Mattaru Ratnakara Hegde condemned the attack and said it was unfortunate that advocates, who work sincerely to ensure justice for their clients, were themselves becoming targets of assault and harassment.
He emphasised that lawyers play an important role in the judicial system and that providing them with adequate protection is the responsibility of the government.
He also called for measures to ensure that advocates can carry out their professional responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
Warning of Stronger Protest
Advocate Akhil Hegde criticised the government for what he described as its negligence in ensuring the safety of lawyers.
He said the advocates would submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to draw the government’s attention to the issue and seek appropriate action.
He further warned that if the government failed to respond positively to their demands, the legal fraternity would intensify its protest in the coming days.
Udupi Advocates Participate in Protest
Members of the Udupi Bar Association participated in the symbolic protest at the district court complex.
The lawyers reiterated their demand for stronger legal and institutional protection for advocates and urged the government to take steps to prevent attacks against members of the legal profession.
The protest highlighted the concerns of the legal fraternity over advocates’ safety and the need for a suitable response from the authorities.
