Udupi: A controversy has emerged in Udupi after the CPI(M) alleged that a Muslim woman from Ballari was denied overnight accommodation at a lodge near the Sri Krishna Mutt on October 3 after staff members checked her Aadhaar card. The allegation has been disputed by the Paryaya Shiroor Mutt, which currently manages the Sri Krishna Mutt and has said that the lodge named in the complaint is not under the mutt’s control.
According to CPI(M) Udupi district secretary Suresh Kallagara, the woman had travelled to Udupi with her Hindu friend Shakuntala and her family. The group visited the Sri Krishna Temple before seeking accommodation for the night.
The allegation has led to a political and social debate over the incident, while the question of who manages the lodge has emerged as a key point of dispute.
CPI(M) alleges accommodation was denied
According to the statement issued by the CPI(M), the woman and the family approached a lodge near the Sri Krishna Mutt at around 8 pm on October 3.
The party alleged that the lodge staff checked the Aadhaar cards of the people seeking accommodation and refused to provide a room to the woman after identifying her as a Muslim.
CPI(M) district secretary Suresh Kallagara said the woman was travelling with her friend Shakuntala and her family. He alleged that members of the family requested the staff to allow her to stay, pointing out that she was like a member of their family and that it would be difficult for her to find accommodation alone in an unfamiliar city at night.
The allegation is based on the account presented by the CPI(M), and the circumstances surrounding the refusal have not been independently established.
Woman reportedly accommodated elsewhere
Following the alleged refusal, the CPI(M) said the woman contacted party workers in Udupi.
According to the party’s account, arrangements were subsequently made for her to stay at the residence of a CPI(M) worker.
The incident was later brought into the public domain through a statement issued by the party, which criticised what it described as discrimination on the basis of religion.
CPI(M) Karnataka secretary K. Prakash also reportedly criticised the alleged denial of accommodation and called for attention from the authorities.
The party has urged the district administration to intervene and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Shiroor Mutt disputes connection with lodge
The Paryaya Shiroor Mutt, which currently administers the Sri Krishna Mutt, has disputed the CPI(M)’s description of the lodge.
Diwan Udaykumar Saralathaya said the lodge identified in the allegation, Birla Choultry, is not managed by the Sri Krishna Mutt.
According to the response, the choultry is operated by a private trust and the mutt has no administrative connection with it. The Diwan also alleged that the controversy was an attempt to tarnish the image of the Sri Krishna Mutt.
This response creates an important distinction between the alleged denial of accommodation and the administration of the Krishna Mutt itself.
While the CPI(M) has referred to the facility as being associated with the mutt, the Shiroor Mutt has said that the lodge is privately managed.
Dispute centres on Birla Choultry
The identification of Birla Choultry has become central to the controversy.
The CPI(M) alleged that the incident took place at the facility near the mutt after the group approached it for overnight accommodation.
The Shiroor Mutt, however, has said that the choultry is managed by a private trust and is not under its authority.
At present, the available reports do not indicate that the district administration has issued a finding establishing either the alleged discriminatory reason for the refusal or the management relationship between the lodge and the mutt.
The distinction is significant because the political criticism has been directed at the Sri Krishna Mutt, while the mutt’s administration has denied responsibility for the lodge.
CPI(M) refers to Udupi’s history of communal interaction
In its criticism, the CPI(M) referred to what it described as Udupi’s history of interactions between members of different religious communities.
Kallagara referred to former Pejawar Mutt seer Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji and his relationship with his Muslim driver. He also referred to the seer’s participation in or support for Iftar gatherings.
The CPI(M) also cited the contribution of Udupi philanthropist Haji Abdullah Saheb, whom the party described as a devotee of the mutt and a person who had provided lamp oil during Deepotsava when the mutt faced difficulties.
The references were made by the party to argue that the alleged denial of accommodation was inconsistent with what it described as Udupi’s tradition of communal interaction.
No official finding reported so far
The controversy remains based largely on competing claims.
The CPI(M) has alleged that the Muslim woman was denied accommodation because of her religion after Aadhaar documents were checked. The Shiroor Mutt has rejected responsibility, saying the lodge was privately managed.
The available reports do not indicate that police or the district administration has announced an independent finding on the allegation.
There is also no reported criminal case arising from the accommodation dispute at the time of the available reports.
Any determination about whether the woman was discriminated against, why accommodation was refused, or whether the facility had any administrative connection with the mutt would require verification by the relevant authorities.
Incident raises questions over accommodation policies
The controversy has also brought attention to the policies followed by religious institutions and associated accommodation facilities when accepting visitors.
Udupi receives large numbers of pilgrims and tourists throughout the year, with visitors staying at a range of hotels, lodges, choultries and accommodation facilities associated with religious institutions.
Clear information about eligibility, identification requirements and accommodation rules can help prevent disputes, particularly when facilities are located close to major religious centres.
In this case, the disagreement over the management of Birla Choultry is itself an important part of the issue, as the two sides have presented different descriptions of the facility’s relationship with the Krishna Mutt.
Calls for district administration intervention
The CPI(M) has called on the Udupi district administration to intervene and ensure that similar incidents do not occur.
The party has characterised the alleged denial as unacceptable and has sought action to prevent discrimination in accommodation.
The Shiroor Mutt, meanwhile, has maintained that the lodge in question is not under its management and has accused those raising the allegation of attempting to damage the mutt’s reputation.
The administration’s response, if any, could help clarify the circumstances surrounding the complaint and the status of the accommodation facility.
Conclusion
A dispute has emerged in Udupi after the CPI(M) alleged that a Muslim woman from Ballari was denied overnight accommodation at a lodge near the Sri Krishna Mutt on October 3 following an Aadhaar check. The party alleged that the refusal was linked to her religion.
The Paryaya Shiroor Mutt has disputed the allegation’s connection to the mutt, saying the lodge identified as Birla Choultry is managed by a private trust and is not under the Sri Krishna Mutt’s control. The competing claims have not been independently resolved in the available reports.
The incident has therefore raised questions both about the alleged denial of accommodation and about the ownership and management of the lodge. Any further action by the district administration or other authorities could clarify the circumstances.
