The remaining cases included matters pending before various courts and tribunals across the district.

The figures underline the role of Lok Adalats in providing an alternative mechanism for resolving disputes through settlement rather than prolonged litigation.

₹14.46 crore compensation declared

The settlements resulted in a total compensation amount of ₹14,45,52,485 being declared.

Compensation in Lok Adalat settlements can arise from different categories of disputes, including motor accident claims and financial or civil matters. The amount declared during the Udupi district exercise reflects the financial value of the disputes resolved during the proceedings.

The settlement process is intended to provide litigants with a quicker resolution while reducing the burden on courts.

Judiciary and departments support exercise

The National Lok Adalat was conducted with the cooperation of several judicial, legal and government bodies.

A press release from the Principal District and Sessions Judge stated that the programme received cooperation from the judiciary, the District Legal Services Authority and taluk legal services committees.

The Bar Associations of Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala, Byndoor and Brahmavar also supported the proceedings.

Officials and personnel from the Department of Prosecutions, Government Litigation Department, police, revenue department and Mines and Geology Department participated in the process.

Insurance companies, banks, litigants and other government departments were also involved in facilitating the settlements.

Lok Adalat offers alternative dispute resolution

Lok Adalats are designed to provide an alternative forum for resolving eligible disputes through settlement. They are particularly significant in cases where both parties are willing to reach an agreement and avoid prolonged court proceedings.

The process can help reduce litigation costs and time for disputing parties while also helping courts manage their pending caseload.

The large number of pre-litigation matters settled in Udupi indicates the importance of resolving disputes at an early stage, before they enter or progress through the regular judicial process.

Udupi records large-scale settlement

The settlement of 61,367 cases in a single day marks a significant legal services exercise across Udupi district.

With courts in Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala and Byndoor participating, the National Lok Adalat brought together judicial authorities, legal services institutions, lawyers, government departments, financial institutions, insurance companies and litigants.

The declaration of around ₹14.46 crore in compensation further highlights the financial scale of the matters resolved during the exercise.

The proceedings demonstrate how coordinated dispute-resolution initiatives can provide litigants with an avenue to settle eligible cases through mutual agreement while supporting the broader objective of reducing the burden of litigation.
